Emergency Notice – Shelter in Place (Paterson OEM Advisory) – 9/13/25

UPDATE: AS OF 6PM THE SHELTER IN PLACE HAS BEEN LIFTED. ALL ARE ADVISED TO AVOID SMOKE AND KEEP WINDOWS CLOSED.

Date/Time: September 13, 2025 – 1315 hrs
Location: 198 Putnam Street, Paterson, NJ

The City of Paterson has issued a Shelter-in-Place Advisory for all residents and businesses within 2,000 feet of an active fire at 198 Putnam Street. The fire involves unknown materials that may include hazardous substances. The Paterson Fire Department and County Hazmat are on scene and assessing the situation.

Impact to SJUMC:

  • St. Joseph’s University Medical Center is outside the official 2,000-foot zone, but remains less than half a mile from the incident.
  • At this time, no protective action orders have been issued for the hospital.
  • Emergency Management & Preparedness is actively monitoring the situation and is in communication with Paterson OEM and County Hazmat.
  • Facilities, Security, Environmental Services, the Emergency Department, and Administration have been notified and are taking precautionary measures.

Safety Guidance for Staff:

  • Remain alert for smoke, odors, or haze in or around hospital facilities.
  • Keep all windows and doors closed.
  • Limit unnecessary outdoor activity.
  • Facilities is monitoring HVAC systems to minimize outside air infiltration.
  • Staff working near entrances/exits or outdoors may use N95 or higher respiratory protection if smoke conditions worsen.
  • Report any unusual conditions or personal symptoms (eye irritation, shortness of breath, dizziness) immediately to your supervisor, Employee Health, or the Emergency Department.

Next Steps:
Updates will be provided through SJHAlert and the internal site as new information becomes available. Staff will be notified immediately if protective actions are expanded to include SJUMC.
