Due to Hurricane Helene’s impact on Baxter’s manufacturing site and the recent ILA strike, we face potential IV fluid shortages. To address this, we are implementing the following measures, per Dr. Duffy (CMO):
- Prioritize Critical Care Patients: IV fluids are reserved for critically ill, surgical, or life-saving hydration cases.
- Encourage Oral Hydration: Use oral hydration when possible, including oral rehydration solutions and electrolyte drinks.
- Review Clinical Protocols: Adjust protocols to reduce IV fluid use, including early oral hydration in post-op care.
- Minimize Waste: Administer precise IV fluid doses to avoid overuse.
- Consider Alternative Medication Routes: Use oral, subcutaneous, or intramuscular options where appropriate.
- Switch to Smaller Fluid Bags: Transition from 1000mL to 500mL fluid bags when clinically feasible.
Key Reminders:
- Do not stockpile IV fluids. We must maintain an accurate supply count.
- No sharing of IV fluids with outside systems to preserve our stock.
Your cooperation is essential to ensure we meet patient needs during this shortage. Thank you for your dedication.
