St. Joseph’s Health Family,
As we approach the significant astronomical event of the Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024, it is imperative to prioritize the safety and well-being of our staff and their families. The following guidelines are issued to ensure a safe observation experience during this remarkable celestial occurrence.
Overview of the Solar Eclipse
On the specified date, a partial solar eclipse will be visible across our region, with approximately 90% of the sun’s surface being obscured by the moon. It is critical to understand that at no point during the event will it be safe to view the eclipse without the appropriate protective eyewear.
Mandatory Eye Protection Measures
Direct exposure to the solar eclipse without proper protection can result in severe eye damage. Adherence to the following protective measures is mandatory:
- Certification of Safety Glasses: Only use eclipse glasses that are explicitly certified, bearing a statement of conformity to the ISO 12312-2 standards for direct solar observation. These glasses are designed to protect your eyes from harmful solar radiation.
- Viewing Precautions: It is unsafe to view the sun directly with the naked eye or through any optical device without a certified solar filter. This includes cameras, binoculars, and telescopes, which must be equipped with solar filters to prevent irreversible eye damage.
Alternative Viewing Methods
For those who prefer an indirect observation method, creating a pinhole projector is a safe and effective way to view the eclipse. This device projects an image of the sun onto a surface, allowing for risk-free observation. NASA offers instructions for an at-home pinhole camera HERE.
Schedule and Visibility
The eclipse will commence at 2:09 p.m. local time, reaching its maximum at 3:24 p.m., and concluding at 4:35 p.m. During the entire event, the use of solar filters is required to prevent eye injury.
Communication and Awareness
We urge all staff to disseminate this critical information widely to ensure that everyone in our community is prepared and protected during the solar eclipse. This event presents a unique opportunity for scientific observation and communal engagement, but safety should remain our foremost priority.
Your adherence to these guidelines is essential for a safe and enjoyable solar eclipse experience.
We thank you for your attention to these matters and look forward to a successful observation event.
