NASA has confirmed that the loud “sonic boom” heard throughout the NYC Metro area was caused by a meteor traveling over New York City and New Jersey. The meteor broke up in the atmosphere, resulting in the loud noise and shaking that some experienced.
What We Know:
- The noise was due to a meteor breaking up in the atmosphere.
- The event was experienced across Union County, NJ, New York State, and Morris County, NJ.

We are aware of reports regarding a loud “sonic boom” that was heard across the NYC Metro area. This event has been reported from Union County, NJ, up through New York State and out to Morris County, NJ. At this time, there are no official confirmations or explanations for the cause of this sound.
